Omani frankincense: from the Boswellia tree to your home
Frankincense has been cherished for thousands of years for its captivating aroma and medicinal properties. Extracted from the Boswellia tree, this precious resin has played a vital role in cultures and traditions around the world. Today, frankincense remains a highly sought-after natural remedy and aromatic substance.
Where does frankincense come from?
Frankincense is obtained from trees belonging to the Boswellia genus, which primarily grow in arid regions of the Middle East, Africa and India. The resin is harvested by making small incisions in the tree’s bark, allowing the sap to seep out and harden into tear-shaped droplets. Once collected, the resin is graded based on its colour, purity and fragrance.
The finest quality frankincense is particularly associated with Oman, which produces some of the world’s most esteemed varieties of Boswellia sacra. The region’s unique climate and soil conditions contribute to the exceptional purity and potency of its frankincense.
100 +
Years
Frankincense trees can live over 100 years, but over-harvesting reduces productivity and tree lifespan.
80 %
Highest quality
Over 80% of the world’s highest quality frankincense (Boswellia sacra) is harvested in Dhofar, Oman, particularly around Salalah.
3-10
Kilograms
Each Boswellia tree can yield about 3 to 10 kilograms of frankincense resin per year, depending on age and environmental conditions.
2-3
Weeks
It takes 2 to 3 weeks for a single resin harvest cycle: after tapping, the first resin (called “tears”) is scraped and discarded, while the subsequent collection yields the usable resin.
Different types of Omani frankincense
Oman is home to several premium varieties of frankincense, each with its distinct characteristics and applications:
Hojari frankincense
Often considered the highest grade. The Green Hojari variety in particular is known for its pale, greenish hue and superior aroma. It is highly prized for its purity and is commonly used in medicine and luxury perfumery.
Najdi frankincense
This variety comes from the Najd region of Oman and is slightly darker in colour. It has a strong, deep fragrance and is often used for therapeutic purposes, including respiratory support and stress relief.
Shazri frankincense
Found in the Dhofar region, this type has a more earthy scent and is frequently used for incense and traditional remedies.
Sha’bi frankincense
The most commonly available type, this variety is slightly lower in grade but still possesses the beneficial properties of Boswellia sacra. It is widely used for daily burning and general wellness applications.
Uses of frankincense
Frankincense from Oman has a wide range of applications:
Aromatherapy & incense
Burning Omani frankincense releases a calming, grounding aroma that is widely used in relaxation. It is often burned in gatherings and homes to purify the air and create a peaceful environment.
Medicinal benefits
Omani frankincense contains powerful compounds, including boswellic acids, which are known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It is often used in skin care to promote healing and reduce blemishes; natural remedies for arthritis and joint pain; supporting respiratory health; and reducing stress and anxiety.
Essential oil extraction
Frankincense resin is distilled to create essential oil, which is widely used in perfumes, massage oils and holistic treatments. The essential oil is prized for its ability to enhance relaxation, boost immunity and improve skin health.
